Birmingham City FC - Knighthead Performance Centre
Creating a world-class Category 1 training academy
Alongside a large-scale renovation project at St Andrew’s @ Knightshead Park, Ardent Sports also led on the redevelopment of Birmingham City FC’s training and academy centre to elevate the facility to Category 1 status.
The Ardent Sports team spent time with staff and players across the club’s full set-up - from youth and academy teams, to men’s and women’s first teams - to gain a deeper understanding of the needs of each key stakeholder group; protecting their interests and creating an environment where they can perform at their best.
As well as serving the needs of existing stakeholders, the club wanted the Knighthead Performance Centre to become a valuable asset in player recruitment and retention, aligned to the club’s ambitious growth plans.
The project involved a complete renovation of the existing facility, to include two new changing rooms, new performance gym, kitchen, dining room and staff offices. A new artificial pitch with improved lighting was installed, as well as a show pitch with 250-seat stand, plus renovations to the indoor pitch.
A new modular building was connected to the existing facility, housing an education hub for youth and academy teams, parent’s lounge, performance area, and social spaces to encourage teamship and togetherness.
Dedicated spaces were created for players’ support services, including nutrition, medical, and rehab, recovery, sports psychology and media; exemplary of the club’s holistic approach to player development.
